Otzi was discovered by two German hikers in the Otztal Alps between Italy and Austria (hence the name, Otzi. This was roughly 3200.4 metres above sea level. He was found in an icy gully and in that little protected area, an ice glacier moved across it, making sure he stayed there. He was found half buried in the ice glacier. That ice glacier started melting in the 1800s and still continues to melt today.
Today, a monument has been put in place in honor of where Otzi was found.
His founding area is more important politically than it is historically due to the fact that in Otzi's time, countries didn't exist. Austria and Italy fought a long and bitter battle to gain custody of the Iceman. Having a 5300 year old body in their possession was a great tool for tourism and a fantastic addition to their national museums.
After tests later conducted, historians and scientists were able to figure out that Otzi most likely came from what is now known is Italy. It's hypothesized that Otzi traveled about 300 metres up the mountain; however why he was there and where he fully came from is still a mystery. Today, there are 19 living descendents of the Iceman all living in Austria; which also partly contradicts him being Italian. Perhaps, he was from what we now call Austria moving into the other land.
